My Fairy God Mother

There are so many easy ways for me to do good deeds. Today’s good deed was a simple phone call.

Today’s good deed: CALL SOMEONE AND TELL HER YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT HER

“I’ve been thinking about you off and on all day!”

Those should have been the words that came out of my mouth. Instead, they came out of hers.

My Godmother is 88 years old. Old. What an odd word to use to talk about her.

It’s true she uses phrases like, “But yet and still …” and “By jingo!” like a person from a former time. And she refers to credit cards as “charge plates.” But she doesn’t seem old to me.

Her hair has long been silver, and she still uses a Polaroid camera and wonders, “Why in the devil don’t they make film for it like they used to?” But “old?”

She comes from a time where you respect your elders and you don’t talk on the phone for too long and you make corn bread by hand on the “stovetop.”  And she still uses a push mower to cut her grass. But yet and still … she doesn’t seem old to me.

My Godmother has more spirit, more spunk and more life than most people I know. And she certainly doesn’t laugh like an old woman. She’s always, “rippin’ and runnin’,” and going to “To Do’s.”  Next weekend is no exception. The Tennessee Ball will be honored with her presence.

She’s my wonderful, force to be reckoned with, God-fearing, God-loving, Godmother. Calling her was my good deed for the day. Her picking up the phone was the good deed she did for me.

Holly Walker

Ms. Walker made her acting debut at the tender age of 8 in For Spring is the Season of Happiness. She almost turned down the role of Mother Nature (she wanted the role of "Spring") until she found out Mother Nature had the most lines. On that day, a diva was born. Holly has traveled the world performing comedy. She has been to more than 40 U.S. states and over 30 countries worldwide. She is an alum of the improvisational companies Boom Chicago and The Second City. Holly currently works on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore as a writer and performer. She has been a part of the Rebel Storytellers family since 2009 and hopes to be with them for many years to come.
