I have great friends, the best in the world. They love and support me … and I’m no picnic. I have a habit of dropping off the face of the earth from time to time. But when I come back, there they are. They accept all of my shortcomings and love me anyway. And I love them.
Patrick is one of my dear friends. We have been friends since 1988 when we worked at Cedar Point, the amusement park, in Sandusky, Ohio. Patrick worked at the nacho stand and I worked as a sweeperette. My love of nachos brought us together. I ate at his stand at least 3 times a week. Ahh … youth.
After finishing our summer jobs, Patrick and I exchanged addresses and became pen pals. He did most of the writing. I think he wrote me 5 letters to every one I wrote him. Regardless, every Christmas and birthday I could count on a handwritten letter from Patrick. My dearest Patrick.
There’s something special about receiving a handwritten note from a friend (especially Patrick … he has the best penmanship I’ve ever seen, even better than my Mom’s!). I can feel all the love the writer has for me in every phrase, word and squiggly letter. That’s why I’m particularly happy about today’s good deed.
Today’s good deed: BUY A BOX OF BIRTHDAY CARDS AND THANK YOU NOTES SO YOU’RE ALWAYS READY TO MARK AN OCCASION.
I found a stationary store up the street that’s going out of business. Their cards are 75% off. I made out like a bandit!
I got a lot of ‘Awkward Family Photo’ cards. My favorite is a picture of a baby being kissed on either side by his parents. The parents are so sincere, loving and affectionate … which makes their son’s freaked out—and dare I say, perturbed reaction—so priceless. It’s fantastic!
Here are some ‘Awkward Family Baby Photos’ for you to enjoy.
A girlfriend of mine is having a birthday today. She’s holding down a strenuous job as well as taking on the duties of being a new mom. Needless to say, she’s exhausted. I’m going to jot down a handwritten happy birthday message and tell her how proud of her I am in one of my new 75% off birthday cards. She’ll never know I paid so little for it. But if I can brighten her day at least 25% as much as Patrick brightens mine with his cards, then I will have done a good deed.
