I loved today’s good deed. If I had my way, I’d still be doing it right now. In fact, I could do it all night long.

Today’s good deed: GO TO AN INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE, MOVIE OR BUSINESS

Independent bookstores. They. Are. Fantastic. There are hidden treasures around every corner. I used to work in a wonderful kids bookstore named Storyopolis. I loved it. I loved finding just the right book to spark a kid’s imagination. Maybe I loved it because my inner child is a 10-year-old boy who loves reading Captain Underpants. Seriously, who didn’t love the Invasion of the Incredibly Naughty Cafeteria Ladies from Outer Space (and the Subsequent Assault of the Equally Evil Lunchroom Zombie Nerds)?

Today I took my inner child to another splendiferous indie emporium: The Iliad Bookshop. Los Angeles Magazine listed it as one of the best used book stores in L.A. … and I wholeheartedly agree. They have over 125,000 books to choose from. Children’s books, screenplays, sci-fi, biographies, graphic novels, classic literature, historic non-fiction. Books on music, art, sports, self-help … You name it, they’ve got it! AND they’ve got comfy couches so I can sit and read Captain Underpants to my heart’s content.

Ironically, the movie You’ve Got Mail is on while I’m writing this. You’ve seen it. Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Dave Chappelle. Two bookstore rivals unwittingly fall in love while sending each other anonymous emails. There’s laughter, there’s tears, there’s Meg Ryan pre-plastic surgery. But there’s also a story that we’re seeing in real life over and over again: huge conglomerate bookstores putting little independent bookstores out of business.

With Amazon and the Kindle being a threat to even big bookstores (insert the poem ‘Ode to Borders’ here), independent bookstores have little chance without neighborhood support. I for one will be supporting indie bookstores like The Iliad and Storyopolis for as long as they’re around. I will happily stay in there day after day, hour after hour, all night long.

Holly Walker

Ms. Walker made her acting debut at the tender age of 8 in For Spring is the Season of Happiness. She almost turned down the role of Mother Nature (she wanted the role of "Spring") until she found out Mother Nature had the most lines. On that day, a diva was born. Holly has traveled the world performing comedy. She has been to more than 40 U.S. states and over 30 countries worldwide. She is an alum of the improvisational companies Boom Chicago and The Second City. Holly currently works on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore as a writer and performer. She has been a part of the Rebel Storytellers family since 2009 and hopes to be with them for many years to come.
