Some time back a friend of mine stumbled upon this abandoned church north of Dayton, Ohio. The Union Falls Gospel Church. It was in an amazing state of decay. There were still pews, a pulpit and a piano inside. Barely inside, since parts of walls and the roof had caved in and the floor had given way to dirt and foliage.
Mostly surrounded by trees and brush, it was still like a secret sanctuary even though it had little life. The tin steeple, toppled to the ground and filled with bullet holes, the front doors partially open, a piano that still had a few keys that played a note and a former window wide open to the midday’s sun filtering through the trees outside.
We met a local man who had lived near the church for most of his life and he filled us in on a few details of the past. We had an instant, willing tour guide for the next hour.
The property was slated for complete demolition; it was certainly too far gone to have anything else done with it. We happened to stop by just a few weeks before it was wiped off the ground forever.
