The Gratitude Challenge

In Doing The Deed by Holly Walker

I need to get out of my funk. I spent a whole day in bed. I woke up, brushed my teeth, made coffee, and got right back into bed. I need to shake myself out of this.

Today’s good deed: WRITE A LIST OF THE THINGS YOU’RE GRATEFUL FOR

There’s a challenge going around Facebook. Not the Ice Bucket Challenge, the Gratitude Challenge. You’re supposed to list 3-5 things you’re grateful for every day for 3-7 consecutive days. Blah blah blah.

I’ve been challenged but I haven’t done it. Why? Because,

1) I don’t believe in doing something that I have to do like chain letters or “challenges.” That went out with “double dog dares” back in elementary school. And,

2) I’m just not feeling it. I’m not connected to it. I have lots of things to be grateful for, I know, but I’m not in the mood.

I decided to watch an inspirational video to change my disposition. I choose My Last Days: Meet Zach Sobiech.

Okay. Now I’m a blubbering mess. My eyes are all puffy and my nose is stopped up. I’ve got that snot running thing like Viola Davis in Doubt.

Strangely enough though, I’m feeling better. A 20-minute video did me a world of good. Nothing like a little perspective to set things straight. I’m feeling grateful and downright blessed. So here’s my list of the things I’m grateful for, not because I have to write them, but because I want to.

(Some of) The Things I’m Grateful For (in no particular order):

My Family
My Friends
The Second City
Star Trek
Laughter
Dr. Who
Cruise Ships
Improv
My Relationship with God
My Church Home
Rebel Pilgrim
Coffee Ice Cream with Chocolate Cappuccino Bits in It
My Health
A Roof Over My Head
Money in the Bank
My Mental Stability
Whoopi Goldberg
Health Insurance
Dental Insurance
My Car
My Hammacher Schlemmer Alarm Clock that Wakes Me Up with Gradual Light and Song Birds
Song Birds
Parts of Alaska
All of Amsterdam
Park Gruell and the Picasso Museum in Barcelona
Loving Parents
Marvel Comic Books (and Brothers that Let Me Borrow Them)
Eating Multiple Times a Day
Softball and Second Base
My Kind Heart, Quick Wit, Sharp Mind, and Gentle, Humble Soul

I’m feeling much better. I just might get out of bed.

Holly Walker

Ms. Walker made her acting debut at the tender age of 8 in For Spring is the Season of Happiness. She almost turned down the role of Mother Nature (she wanted the role of "Spring") until she found out Mother Nature had the most lines. On that day, a diva was born. Holly has traveled the world performing comedy. She has been to more than 40 U.S. states and over 30 countries worldwide. She is an alum of the improvisational companies Boom Chicago and The Second City. Holly currently works on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore as a writer and performer. She has been a part of the Rebel Storytellers family since 2009 and hopes to be with them for many years to come.
