We have received great news today. Mason doesn’t have vocal cord polyps or nodules like we expected. Instead he has muscle tension dysphonia which hopkinsmedicine.org describes as, “A change in the sound or the feel of your voice due to excessive muscle tension in and around the voice box.” He starts laryngeal therapy soon.
For the past several weeks Mason has been resting his voice (as much as humanly possible for a people-loving teenager) and trying to keep singing to a minimum. This gave us a chance to look at polishing up an instrumental piece we entitled “Oriental Gypsy.” Over a year ago we got into Gypsy Jazz and couldn’t get enough of the great Django Reinhardt. We were fooling around one day and came up with a simple lick that took greater form. Last week we spent 22 minutes and added a couple of ideas that really helped the piece take root. Mason wanted to be sure to point out that this piece in essence took 1 year and 22 minutes to write.
