Brad Wise
One year ago our indie rom-com, A Strange Brand of Happy, just finished its theatrical run in 45 theaters in 40 cities across the US of A. In 2011, while on set shooting the movie, Jim Zartman (our composer) started chatting up Anis Mojgani during a break. Jim asked him how he ended up being a part of the movie and Anis replied, “Because Brad wouldn’t stop asking me.”
It’s true. I knew Anis had to perform Come Closer in our movie. It changed how I viewed God and gave beautiful words to things I had been feeling and trying (poorly) to say for years. So, even though Anis kept turning me down (very politely) over the course of months and months, I kept pursuing him. When his schedule changed last minute and he couldn’t be there the day we needed him, I had Isaac change the schedule.
When your gut knows, it knows. The response from the cast and crew the day we shot this scene was the proof. There was hardly a dry eye in the house. And since then the number one thing I hear from people after seeing the movie is, “I loved that spoken word piece.”
The lesson I learned from the whole thing is to have the patience and courage to pursue your inklings. Rejection is worth going through to find out if your gut was tuned in to something holy.
